In Memoriam. Alexander Roxburgh Murray, 2nd Lieut., 17th Highland Light Infantry. Born at Chungking, West China, on Christmas Day, 1897. [HLMainPic] Alexander Roxburgh Murray was educated at Glasgow Academy where he excelled at athletics and Rugby Football. Leaving school in 1915 he was commissioned in the 17th (Service) Battalion Highland Light Infantry (The Glasgow Chamber of Commerce battalion) and went to France in July 1916. He was just eighteen when he fell on 18th November 1916 and is buried in New Munich Trench British Cemetery, Beaumont Hamel. This small book, printed on art paper throughout, contains a 'photographic essay' of his young life, growing up in China and Scotland, and later in uniform, followed by several pages of extracts from letters of condolence. [HLMainPic] William Wallace ("Willie") Colquhoun was educated at Glenalmond, where he was a Cadet Officer and Captain of the School, and graduated at Columbia University, New York, in 1914. Coming home, he obtained a commission in the 11th (Service) Battalion Highland Light Infantry (9th Scottish Division) and proceeded to France in May 1915. He fell during the Battle of Loos, leading "B" Company in the attack on Hohenzollern Redoubt, on 25th September 1915. He was twenty-five and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial. Includes extracts from letters in training and valuable descriptions of trench warfare in 1915, with much of interest on the Battle of Loos and the attack in which he met his death.
